Captions Free vs Basic vs Max: what’s the difference?

Free covers basic manual editing with one caption template; Basic adds paid editing tools and 200 monthly credits; Max unlocks the AI editing and generation features Captions is known for. Captions’ pricing page lists 1 caption template on Free and 100+ on paid plans.

  • Free ($0): 60 to 200 lifetime credits that don’t refresh, the “Eclipse” caption template, and exports using captions, camera, trim, zoom, sounds, media, voiceover, transitions and resize. Using any other feature prompts an upgrade.
  • Basic ($9.99/month): 200 credits a month, exports without a watermark, Reddit to Video, script generator, camera and teleprompter, caption and dub, plus AI tools for eye contact, denoise, censor, zoom, voiceover, title cards, text and trim.
  • Max ($24.99/month): 500 credits a month, everything in Basic, plus chat-to-edit, AI Edit, Clips (long video to short clips), AI-generated actors, up to 30 AI Twins, and AI-generated media, sound effects and music.
  • Frontier ($69.99/month): 1,400 credits, everything in Max, faster generations, and 2x ($139.99, 2,800 credits) or 4x ($279.99, 5,600 credits) tiers.
  • Lite ($4.99/month): Android only; manual editing tools such as caption styles, dubbing, eye contact and denoise. It can’t be used on iPhone or desktop.

How do Captions app credits work?

Captions credits pay for AI features, not uploads or exports. Its help center says every AI feature (generated images, video, sounds, music, voiceovers, prompt-to-video and AI Edits) deducts credits, and credits are spent even if you never export the project. How many videos a plan covers depends on which AI features you use.

  • AI Edit: 10 to 40 credits, depending on video duration and model.
  • Prompt to Video: 16 credits every 6 seconds.
  • Chat-based editing: 2 credits per message plus 1 per action taken.
  • Generated media: images 1 to 3 credits, video 1 to 20, music 1 to 2 (model-specific costs vary).

On Basic and above, unused credits roll over, capped at 3 times your monthly allowance. You can’t buy individual credits on standard plans; the help center says to upgrade instead. Downgrading cuts your balance to the new cap, and cancelling forfeits remaining credits when the billing period ends.

Does the Captions app watermark exports?

Paid Captions plans export without a watermark, with one catch. Its help center says that if you use Max-only features (Co-Editor, AI Edit, AI-generated images or videos, or AI Creator) on Basic, the export will carry a watermark until you remove those features or upgrade to Max. The Free plan’s help entry lists “no watermarks” for its basic features, so test an export before you rely on it.

How do Captions billing and refunds work?

Where you subscribe decides how you cancel and get refunds. Captions’ help center says App Store and Google Play subscriptions are billed and refunded by Apple or Google (see Apple’s refund guide and Google Play’s refund page), while monthly plans bought on its website are non-refundable but can be cancelled anytime. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends.

Which Captions plan should you choose?

  • Occasional captioned clips with one style: Free.
  • Captions, dubbing and teleprompter without AI editing: Basic at $9.99/month.
  • AI Edit, Clips or AI actors: Max at $24.99/month, the lowest plan with those features.
  • Heavy AI video generation: Frontier or its 2x/4x tiers.

Strengths: Captions works end to end on your phone, offers 100+ caption templates on paid plans and says it supports captions in 100+ languages. For a browser-based option, see Submagic vs Captions app or our breakdown of Submagic pricing.

How does AnimateCaptions pricing compare?

AnimateCaptions is a narrower, caption-only tool, so it costs less but has no AI editing, avatars or dubbing. AnimateCaptions, a browser-based tool that auto-transcribes your video and burns in animated, word-by-word captions, has these plans as of November 2026, per our pricing page:

  • Free: €0, no credit card, 3 videos and 10 renders a month, videos up to 2 minutes, 1080p, exports carry a watermark.
  • Creator: from €6.99/month for 15 videos (€12.99 for 30, €24.99 for 60), up to 2 minutes, no watermark.
  • Pro: from €12.99/month for 15 videos (€19.99 for 30, €32.99 for 60), up to 5 minutes, 1080p and 4K, no watermark.

Plans are billed monthly with a 7-day money-back guarantee, and there are no AI credits to track. Whatever you use, check auto-generated captions before posting; the W3C’s captions guidance notes automatic captions usually need editing.

Yes, there is a Free plan. Captions' help center says it includes 60 to 200 lifetime credits that don't refresh, one caption template (Eclipse) and basic tools such as captions, camera, trim, zoom, sounds, voiceover and transitions. Using any other feature in a project prompts you to upgrade.

Why isn't the Basic plan on the Captions pricing page?

On 1 November 2026, Captions' pricing page showed only Max, Frontier and Enterprise (plus Free in its comparison table). The $9.99 Basic plan, formerly called Pro, is listed in its help center's Subscriptions & Plans and Understanding Credits pages, so check the in-app paywall for what is offered to you.

Do Captions credits roll over?

Does the Captions app add a watermark?

Is there a cheaper Captions app alternative for animated captions?

If you only need animated, word-by-word captions on clips up to 2 minutes, AnimateCaptions' Creator plan starts at €6.99/month with no watermark. Its free plan gives 3 videos a month with watermarked exports (as of November 2026).

Only need animated captions, not an AI studio?

Upload an .mp4 or .mov up to 2 minutes, fix any word in the transcript, pick one of 32+ animated styles, and export. Free to start (watermarked); paid plans from €6.99/month remove the watermark.
